Unit content:This unit is comprised of three sections: Games and Culture, Game Design and Research Methods. In the first section we focus on the social effects and cultural context of games and play, beginning with an introduction to the disciplinary field of Game Studies, followed by a critical overview of ‘gamification’ and ‘ludification’, and an exploration of player communities and gamer cultures. In the second section we turn to the core principles of Game Design, including a review of critical design, speculative design and co-creative design practices. In the final section we look at the research methods that are specific to the field of Game Studies and Game Design, with a particular focus on practice-led research methods and game ethnography.
