Learning outcomes

1.
Understand the principles of the One Health approach and the application of these principles to determine the key epidemiological features of common zoonoses;
2.
Recognize the zoonotic and environmental drivers of emerging infectious diseases;
3.
Identify the leadership roles, management responsibilities of key stakeholders in One Health problems (i.e. governmental organization, international organizations, and media);
4.
Research and evaluate specific One Health challenges e.g. food safety, antibiotic resistance, emerging diseases and wildlife health and conservation;
5.
Evaluate the evidence needed to establish a control strategy for a zoonotic/emerging disease including: surveillance data and health and economic data;
6.
Present and justify a control program for a zoonotic/emerging disease scenario using the principles of One Health.

Unit content:Key concepts and topics include: - One Health: What is it and why is it important? - The Human-Animal-Environment interface; - Zoonoses classes recognition: traditional, foodborne, vector-borne, occupational, emerging etc.; - Ecosystem approach to health and disease; - Emerging infectious diseases of wildlife and species conservation; - One Health and environmental drivers for specific health challenges: Rabies, Influenza, Cholera, Salmonella, Antibiotic Resistance; - Economics of the One Health; - Social perspectives and community engagement in control of zoonotic diseases; - Future challenges for One Health.
