Learning outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the critical relationship between cultural and ecological diversity in the Asian region.
2.
Recognize underlying assumptions associated with a range of interpretations of the social, cultural and ecological issues affecting the Asian region.
3.
Analyse the complex relationships between conservation and development policy in contemporary Asia.
4.
Apply principles of social ecology to the analysis of community resource management and sustainability issues in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, tourism and small industrial sectors.

1. Introduction— cultural ecology and sustainability frameworks; 2. Cultural ecology of hunters & gatherers in Asia; 3. Cultural Ecology of shifting cultivators: social & political structure; 4. Indigenous minorities, development policy and international human rights; 5. Cultural ecology of peasant societies; 6. Peasant social values: reciprocity & exchange; 7. The Tragedy of the Commons: population & environment issues 8. Transformation of agrarian society & food security issues; 9. The informal sector, Industrial development & pollution issues; 10. Social & ecological change: Bajau case study: coastal sustainability issues; 11. Social & ecological change: Bali case study; Tourism sustainable development issues; 12. Environment culture & development: Forest conservation issues
