Learning outcomes

Identify and analyse blood pattern recognition as applied to crime scenes.

2.

Apply knowledge of police procedures for BPA scene examination 

3.

Develop, to an advanced level, the capacity to interpret forensic data, objectively, using scientifically defensible arguments.

4.

Collect, record and interpret evidence from complex crime scenes so as to generate forensic data that is admissible in Court.

5.

Identify and evaluate the complexities of BPA so as to minimise risk and best serve the investigative and judicial processes.

Key topics covered in this unit include: • The principles of fluid mechanics and the biology and chemistry of blood stain generation. • Theoretical and practical exercises in blood stain pattern recognition and determination of area of origin of spatter events. • Visual and chemical techniques used in BPA laboratory and scene examinations. • Police procedures for BPA scene examinations with casework examples. • Reconstructive BPA scene examination and processing. • Legislation and legal frames works as applied to BPA expert witnesses.
