Learning outcomes

Describe data communication devices and protocols in terms of the layers of the OSI model.

Describe the key functionality of networking protocols and standards, such as IP, TCP, UDP, Ethernet, WiFi/WLANs.

Design basic switched and routed networks including the designing of address plans.

Configure network devices in accordance with network specifications and design.

Configure and describe the operation of switched Ethernet LANs.

Unit content:The unit is organised into these blocks: 1. Networking concepts, terminology and the OSI layered model 2. Application layer communication models and protocols, such as DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH 3. UDP and TCP transport layer protocols 4. IP network layer protocol, IP addressing and subnetting 5. Data link layer and physical layer, communication medium sharing and access control 6. Introduction to wireless networks, technologies and medium access 7. Ethernet protocol, switching and cabling, Virtual LANs (VLANs), inter-VLAN routing 8. Interior routing protocols, distance vector and link state routing, static and dynamic routing 9. Internet structure, autonomous systems and exterior routing protocols 10. IPv6 protocol and Network Address Translation (NAT) 11. Network security introduction 12. Emerging technologies, such as Software Defined Networking SDN) and Internet of Things (IoT)
