Unit content:

Following an introductory lecture that provides an overview of the unit content and rationale, this unit is divided into three sections – Social Media, Games, and Mobile Media. While we will be considering the impact of each domain separately, as the unit progresses we will also explore the way they come together in contemporary life. In the first section we will think critically about the history of social networking, the more recent emergence of social media, and the rise of user-generated content, reflecting on the ongoing transformation of our everyday media and communication practices. The second section turns to the evolution and increasing popularity of digital games, and what has been termed the ‘playful turn’ or ‘ludification’ of culture. We will also look at the way games and playful practices have become integrated into social media platforms and increasingly part of the way we communicate. In the final section of the unit we investigate the ‘small screen’ and its influence on our everyday lives. We begin by examining some of the technological developments in small screen media, including the functionality of iOS and Android mobile devices as well as the role of apps in our daily mobile media use. We then turn our attention to sociality, creativity, and play in relation to mobile media.
