Learning outcomes

Recognise the influential theories of language acquisition and literacies

2.

Integrate the Australian Curriculum English and the Early Years Learning Framework pedagogy, practice and outcomes relevant to language development and literacies in the early years;

3.

Reflect on the diverse strategies and resources that can be used to scaffold, monitor, and evaluate children's language and literacies (including strategies for early intervention);

4.

Communicate the relationship between cultural, linguistic and family diversity and its impact on language and literacies in the early years (including transition to school); and

5.

Acquire professional skills and knowledge necessary for the planning and provision of an integrated programme (that includes play) to engage young children in language and literacies activities.

Unit content:

The unit will assist students: 1. To know how play-based pedagogies can be integrated in teaching methods and strategies to support young children's learning of English; 2. Provide opportunities to apply theoretical understandings of language acquisition and literacies; 3. Initiate discussion on the changing landscape of literacy and consideration of alternative pedagogies and curriculum approaches 4. Know that information and communication technologies can support language development and emerging literacies; and 5. Support one another in broadening knowledge of authentic texts and contexts that deal with diversity: language variation and difference.
