Learning outcomes

Knowledge: you will demonstrate understanding of the immune system in health and disease, and of the principles and applications of laboratory tests conducted in the clinical immunology laboratory.

Communication: through the interactive analysis of case studies, and scientific reports in an appropriate format.

Problem solving skills: through diagnostic strategies involved in the interpretation of laboratory results and clinical data.

Social responsibility: through the development of laboratory skills, analysis of laboratory data and communication involved in the diagnosis of disorders of the immune system and to develop understanding of ethical issues and responsibilities related to clinical immunology and the pathology industry.

Unit content:
This unit examines the immune system in health and disease, and immunological diagnosis. Topics covered include: the major histocompatibility complex immune tolerance monoclonal antibody technology tumour immunology vaccine development immunotherapy transplantation immunoassays immunopathology diagnosis of immunological disorders This unit will cover these topics using an integrated series of lectures, tutorials and practicals. There will be an emphasis on the development of laboratory skills and problem solving through case studies.
