Content to be covered:
1. Introduction to High-Incidence Disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and emotional or behavioural disorders. Terminology, classification, prevalence and common misconceptions.
2. Causes, symptoms and common impairments of individuals with high-incidence disabilities.
3. Communication impairments, augmentative programs and devices: PECS, Makaton, iPad Apps.
4. Addressing social and sensory impairments. Assessing and teaching social and play skills, and learning to manage feelings and emotions. Social interaction patterns, ritualised, stereotyped, repetitive behaviours.
5. Assessment of students with high-incidence disabilities. Screening and assessment instruments, diagnostic processes and, what next.
6. Positive Behaviour Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Universal interventions.
7. Teaching children with high-incidence disabilities. Evidence-based educational practices.
