Understand the relationship between animal welfare science and ethical judgements related to various practices encountered in clinical veterinary contexts.
Identify normal and abnormal behaviour in domestic animals, apply learning theory to the management of behavioural conditions, and apply cooperative care principles to clinical practice.
Apply knowledge of animal welfare science to measuring pain, capture and handling, quality of life assessment, and euthanasia for a range of animal species.
Demonstrate research and communication skills and the tenets of scientific writing in synthesising an engaging and accurate narrative on a contemporary animal welfare issue.

This unit lays the foundations for the transition from student to veterinary professional. Students will become confident in their knowledge of the principles of behaviour and welfare as applied to domesticated and wild species. Approaches will be covered that allow veterinarians to minimise stress in their patients. Several important clinical practice applications will be navigated, including management of normal and abnormal animal behaviour, pain and quality of life assessment, capture and handling of difficult animals, and euthanasia.
