Additional information
This unit is an introduction to empirical research methods commonly used in education research and related disciplines in the social sciences. The emphasis is on quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, but the intention is not to value the associated methods of research over other legitimate forms of research (e.g., historiography or philosophical research). Parallel to the presentation of different methods of research, we will examine the process of research. This is the process by which the researcher takes an idea and formulates this idea into a rigorous research study (or programme); this unit will examine the various steps in this process including the creation of specific research questions and justifying the need for the research. Research is an activity. Research is participatory. Research occurs in a community. This unit is designed to actively engage students in this process from the start of the unit through the end of the unit. The unit coordinator(s) /tutor(s) look forward to assisting you in this very rewarding—and sometimes challenging—process.
