The unit is organised into these topics:
- Networking concepts, terminology and the OSI layered model
- Application layer communication models and protocols, such as DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH
- UDP and TCP transport layer protocols
- IP network layer protocol, IP addressing and subnetting
- Data link layer and physical layer, communication medium sharing and access control
- Introduction to wireless networks, technologies and medium access
- Ethernet protocol, switching and cabling, Virtual LANs (VLANs), inter-VLAN routing
- Interior routing protocols, distance vector and link state routing, static and dynamic routing
- Internet structure, autonomous systems and exterior routing protocols
