Learning outcomes

1.

Undertake legal research; including finding case law, legislation, secondary materials and extrinsic materials.

2.

Read and interpret case law including identifying ratio.

3.

Demonstrate an understanding of the legislative process, structure of legislation and use principles of statutory interpretation to construe legislation.

4.

Apply the legal problem solving skills taught in this unit to introductory legal problem solving questions and produce written answers using these legal problem solving skills.

5.

Identify and discuss the elements of the adversarial system including court hierarchy and jurisdiction, tribunals, ethical obligations of lawyers, Alternative Dispute Resolution (‘ADR’) and the differences between, and the key characteristics of, civil and criminal matters.

6.

Demonstrate an understanding of the arms of government.

7.

Communicate legal information orally and in writing using appropriate conventions.
