Additional information

Unit content:

Module 1: Learning Uni Style Module 1 is a foundational module designed to introduce students to university learning and demystify university culture. It will ease students into this new learning environment and start to develop academic skills such as reading and note-making, academic writing, punctuation and grammar, referencing and essay planning.

Module 2: Knowledge in the Social Sciences: Social Change In Module 2, we build on the academic skills and start to explore the areas of study available at university, starting with the social sciences. Rather than studying specific subjects, students will be asked to explore an area of interest under the theme of ‘Social Change’. This broad scope gives students the opportunity to explore their passions (anything from pop-culture to genetic engineering and everything in between!) while at the same time developing strong academic foundations for their future studies. They will also learn how to express these ideas in writing, develop well-researched arguments and think critically about the world around them. The style of the course activates students to develop confidence and become independent learners in a supportive environment, making the transition into university easy, with lots of laughs along the way.

Module 3: Knowledge in Humanities and Arts: Media and Culture In Module 3 we are going to really hone the students research and writing skills, as they are introduced to ‘humanities and arts’ style ideas. Students will use their growing critical thinking skills to dive into the world of media and culture. They will be guided through how media is produced, develop media literacy and unpack and create their own ‘memes’ with meaning. Through this exploration of media and popular culture students will take their research and essay writing skills to the next level ready for undergraduate studies.

Module 4: Knowledge in Sciences: Science and Numeracy In Module 4 students are introduced to the Sciences. Through a series of engaging and fun topics they will have the opportunity to brush up on their numeracy and scientific knowledge. In this module students will be guided through the scientific method and have an opportunity to put it into action with an online scientific experiment. Students will also be taught how to write up their experiment and findings into a scientific report in preparation for their university studies.
