Explain concepts such as national identity, globalization, transnationalism, the postcolonial, and diaspora to the study of specific films.

Discuss critical theory and its limitations – including deconstruction of film texts.

Explain the development of national cinema policies and industrial developments.

Analyse aesthetic and stylistic distinctiveness of films- reflecting upon one’s viewing position.

Unit content:This unit introduces students to the study of Screen communication principally film (Cinema & Documentary) , Television and the Digital Arts. The principle interest in the study of film lies in developing appropriate aesthetics for communicating the socio-political imperatives of cinematic communication. That is learning key terminology of film studies in order to deconstruct film texts whether short form, drama, documentary, Television and/or digital formats.
