Additional information

Unit content:Students will learn Japanese vocabulary and expressions related to the themes of travel, shopping, farewell parties, seasonal events, studying in Japan, and using the telephone. They will learn Japanese grammatical forms for giving and receiving, for expressing value judgements, desire, sequential actions, duration of time, frequency of action, progressive or ongoing action, and for making polite requests, and so on. In addition, they will learn to read and write Japanese texts that use a combination of hiragana, katakana and a growing number of kanji related to the themes studied in the unit. They will develop familiarity with a variety of Japanese cultural practices related to the seasons and university student life.
Other notes:Advanced students, including those who have Japanese: Second Language ATAR or WACE Japanese or equivalent, should consult with the Academic Chair of Asian Studies to determine level of entry. This is a University-Wide Breadth Unit. If this unit is taken as a Core or Specified Elective unit in a student’s major or minor, it cannot also be used to satisfy the University-Wide Breadth Unit requirement. If taken as a University-Wide Breadth Unit, this unit will contribute to satisfying that Part II requirement of the Bachelor degree, although its credit points will be counted as Part I points; students should note that no more than 30 credit points at Part I may be credited towards course completion requirements.
